St Louis blues......

...not much to do on a snowy afternoon but look out the front door!

...or hang out in bed!
....or put on the coats, gloves and ear muffs and hit the park (quicly)!

Where is Sugarloaf Key?

Around the house-the first days..

Post by W
Zuzu and Tootie’s journey, the first day in their new house, started out on the rug in the bathroom, soft and fluffy and in a safe and confined space. To our dismay the bathroom was going to be their base of operations. We worried that with this being our only bathroom, and a small one at that, over the years, it would present a big challenge to navigate around the two girls while doing whatever one does in the loo. Not to worry though as that part of the journey abruptly ended; neither seems to have felt the need to return to the bathroom since day one. Day two the girls moved in underneath the table in the office. Day three they discovered the down comforter on the king select comfort bed-soft as feathers on my side, hard as rock on the other (!). For two days they camped on the bed, returning there after every mini adventure. I worried that we had become a family divided, them in the bedroom and us in the living room, so we (!) moved our base of operations to the bedroom. I immediately laid down the law that they weren’t to be fed in bed and within 4 seconds, ok maybe 2, you guessed it, I broke the rules and was hand-feeding then meatballs on biscuits….oh well! (Besides, anyone who knows us knows that ‘tis not me who does the law laying!!). Today arrived and we decided to put a big effort into showing them the merits of the sofa. As you can see from the previous posts our efforts were met with immediate success. I am thrilled to report that the sofa is now in the rotation and from that vantage point, hunkered down on this blowing snow and freezing afternoon we will all enjoy an afternoon movie…and I will be serving the girls a snack of meatballs and cheese on biscuits…you see I forgot the cheese for them last time!
The take-away from this post is that the girls are changing with lightning speed…..me, not so much!

SNOW DAY!!!

I woke up around 4:45 a.m. to check the weather out the window and to look at the school closing list on TV. After a brief 5:00 a.m. phone consultation with our head of school, we decided to join the rest of the metropolitan area school administrators and cancel classes for the day to the delight, I'm sure, of our students and teachers.

Zuzu stirred from her crate and promptly took my spot in bed next to Tootie once I got out of bed to begin making my phone calls. Our girls were not very anxious to leave the warmness and softness of the down comforter to experience the cold, blowing snow outside.

Later this morning, we thought they would enjoy a brief walk around the block in the snow. After donning layer upon layer for our trek in the snow, we put their coats on their backs and hooked them up...and we were back inside in less than 5 minutes.

Here's a photo of their preferred view of the snow...

and another of them keeping a watchful eye on dad as he shovels the walk.

We are going to stay in for the rest of the day, I think. It's a good day to settle in on the sofa and watch a movie.

Stay warm...

What's in a name?

Entry by W:
We took a day away from the blog but we’re back, beginning with an explanation of why we decided to change the girls’ names.
We were OK with “Dolly” and certainly “Betty” is a nice enough name but there was a “Betty” in my (long) past that I found particular joy in making crude fun.
In consideration of the most minimal change possible we reasoned we could keep the name “Dolly” and change “Betty” to “Bella” which is very close in intonation. However meeting with the girls prior to adoption and having had the opportunity to observe their personalities, we discussed renaming them “Tootie” and “Zuzu”.
These names are characters in a couple favorite movies. “Tootie” was the cute little girl in “Meet Me in St Louis”. In the movie Tootie’s character was given to adventure, traditions and especially family loyalty. Zuzu was the adorable character in “It’s a Wonderful Life” whose wilted rose petals affirmed the lead’s life (and value). In the movie when the petals are discovered by the lead he exclaims “Zuzu! My little ginger-snap!”
Upon discussion with our vizsla mentors it was pointed out that to date neither girl really knew her name as they were just names given rather quickly once the girls were rescued since prior to that point they (probably) were livestock and had no name(s). As to the name “Bella” it turns out that it is ubiquitous for dogs (females as well as males!). So we made the change and the girls have new names to go with their new lives!
Wilted rose petals aside, Zuzu and Tootie, the newest members of our family, remind that when shared with those you love life’s journey is truly the greatest gift and it is made ever more meaningful through those you have loved and will always remember.

It's was a good day...

Zuzu and I spent a very nice day in our new home with our new dads. We romped and played briefly outside. It was a little too cold to spend a lot of time in the yard, so we spent more time playing inside and catching up on our sleep. We really like the pad in the office. It's perfect for me and my sister!

We went on an errand this afternoon. Dad had to drop a letter in the mail, and then we all went to a pretty cool store filled with toys, treats, and food for us. Wow! We got new collars, a toy, and a barrier to keep on the back seat in the car. I guess I can't try to climb on the dashboard anymore. After a quick stop at a grocery store (mmm...we got some cheese!), we put on our coats and walked Lafayette Square. It was time for cheeses and crackers when we got home before a nice nap...I hear one of our dads in the kitchen. Must be close to dinner time.

From now on, we are going to hand this blogging thing over to our dads from now on. It takes too long for us to type with our paws.

Check back for updates and photos. Thanks for reading!

Zuzu and Tootie

Mmm...what's cookin'?

The curious smell of granola baking in the oven lured me off of my bed in the office to the kitchen to see what's was going on. There, I saw my sister, Tootie, sitting by the sink awaiting any offerings my dads may send her way. I quickly took a spot on the rug directly in front of her so I could be first in line for food and attention!

Here, Tootie sneaks in a quick kiss to our new daddy.

Life is really good!

First Morning

It sure was a quick night. I woke up around 3:45 when I heard Tootie hop off of the bed. When she headed for the bedroom door, our dads got up, too. They went with us out in the backyard so we could go potty (really fast because it was really cold) and once back inside, we all went back to our warm beds. My blanket felt awfully nice after being out in the cold dark morning. Tootie hopped back up into bed to find her warm spot on the down comforter. Life is good.

It was still dark when we all got up again, went out for another quick potty, and, after exploring the basement (more about this later) it was time for breakfast. My sister is always ready to eat. She knows that food comes out of that tall rectangular silver box and there is sometimes food left on the counter tops. She has already been caught with her front paws on the counter checking out the various treasures that await on top. Dad is pretty good about not leaving anything out for the taking, though. I'm still getting used to eating here. The meals sure do taste good, and Tootie sure doesn't waste any time devouring her meal, but I'm still a bit more tentative. After breakfast, we went back outside to the front yard this time. These guys must like the cold because they sure do take us outside a lot. This time, my sister did have to go potty, but not me. I was ready to go back into the warmth before we headed out!

We found our spot in the office. Our dads prepared us a nice bed under a table in there so we can sleep while they work.

Last Night

Last night, we said good bye to our foster moms and then began exploring our new home. We explored our new yard around the house (I tried to play with my sister, Zuzu, nibbling on her ears, but she wasn't too interested, so I ran a little instead) It was mighty cold outside so we didn't linger in the yard much with our dads. Back inside, we explored the office, the bedroom, and found our resting spot on a nice green fluffy bath rug in the bathroom. Zuzu likes to hang out in there and I go in and out to check on her. I must admit that I'm a bit more outgoing and adventurous. In due time, Zuzu will see that as my foster mom said, we've hit the mother load and all will be fine. Dinner was pretty good! Our one dad appears to be our master chef. He prepared us boiled hamburger and broiled us a steak, too! This was mixed in with our kibbles. It was a very fine three-course meal. After dinner, it was time for a walk. We donned our coats as did our dads, but they put on a few more layers than we did, and with leashes attached, off we went into the winter night. We explored a small open field at the end of our street before returning to the warmth of our home. Once inside, we played a bit before I needed to go back out to potty. Bedtime came a bit early for our dads last night. 8:30!! But who could blame them for being tired. They had just spent 23 hours in a car coming back from their trip to Sugarloaf Key, Florida. They were anxious to get back to welcome us to our new home on this quiet street in Benton Park. Our dads fixed up Zuzu's crate in the bedroom and I enjoyed the down comforter on their bed. Lights out at 8:45....

First Day

Today is the first day in our new home. Our journey on this planet so far has consisted of little human companionship, but that changed when we were rescued at an auction and fostered in two very loving families full of love, hugs, and kisses...not only from the other Viszlas in the family, but from our foster parents, too. The world quickly expanded from what we were used to for the past four and half years of our lives. We soon discovered the joys of wrestling with our brothers and sisters, taking walks, lounging on sofas and chairs, and sleeping in with our foster parents in their nice warm beds. Today, we are beginning a new chapter in our lives. We have been reunited and given new names, Zuzu and Tootie. We think they are nice names, but we are still getting used to them. Our two dads are pretty cool, too. We can tell that it's going to be all about us...but we won't push the limits too far, yet. Tootie already enjoys the warm home cooked meals prepared for us, and has even surfed the counters once or twice to be sure there weren't any leftovers. Zuzu is still a little shy and apprehensive, but is slowly building her courage around her new dads.
